Pregnancy. What a great moment in life, so much joy, nerves, emotions… and so many questions! A sea of doubts about what are the things I can and cannot do during this stage. Should I exercise? Can I eat anything? How much will my body change? And my mood? And my skin? What cosmetics can I keep in my routine and which ones not?
The first step is always to consult our doubts with medical specialists and thanks to the experts in different areas and the times we live in, we are fortunate to be more and more up to date with all this information to make decisions based on knowledge. Today from Uniquely we come to summarize and contribute our grain of sand so that your skin remains well cared for during this new and exciting stage.
When we become pregnant, the two paths our minds follow when looking for suitable cosmetics are basically two: “I don’t want to harm my baby with the products I apply” and “I wouldn’t want the hormonal changes to drastically affect the state of my skin”.
To face this stage it is important for us to emphasize that cosmetic ingredients – and not drugs – are used locally, topically and without reaching the bloodstream, so both during pregnancy and during breastfeeding, are safe substances for your baby. Even so, caution in the face of ignorance is important and due to the lack of studies on the subject, it is advisable to avoid the use of a few ingredients such as:
- Retinoids, since they are potentially teratogenic orally, it is reasonable to avoid them topically as a precaution,
- Resorcinol, like the previous one, has been reported to cause toxicity in the fetus orally, so limiting its use topically seems sensible,
- Essential oils, because they have a very high absorption due to their volatility,
- Caffeine, in extensive areas of the skin is inadvisable, but admissible in localized areas such as the face or eye contour,
- Salicylic acid, like caffeine, at cosmetic concentrations and in localized areas, is not contraindicated during pregnancy.
As for the changes in the skin derived from the hormonal alterations experienced during this period, the best advice we can give you is to keep an eye on your skin and use cosmetics that help you prevent these possible pregnancy-related alterations such as:
- Imperfections and acne.
- Blemishes, melasma.
- Changes in the condition of the skin (the skin may turn to other types and, above all, become more sensitive).
Remember that you do not have to go through any of these alterations, especially if you are able to prevent them with the use of cosmetics that adapt to the characteristics of your skin at all times and circumstances. In our diagnostic test you can tell us this and much more so that we can formulate for you a specific facial cream adapted to each stage of your life..
