In the last few years, the world of cosmetics has taken a leap into everyday life and it is becoming more and more common for us to be interested not only in what our skin needs but also in the active ingredients we use to care for it. The origin of the ingredients that make up the products we use is becoming increasingly important when it comes to making a decision. Therefore, here we are going to see what variables to take into account when choosing them.
As a general rule, we can speak of products with natural or synthetic ingredients. However, other terms such as vegan and organic can also be added to the previous ones. The difference between them is none other than their origin or the way they are obtained, but it may surprise us to know that a natural product is not the same as a product of natural origin. Natural does not necessarily have to be both vegan and organic, and vegan can go hand in hand with synthetic. The multitude of existing concepts allows brands to “segment” their products in an attempt to guide consumers in their purchase, although they can also generate some confusion. Let’s look at what defines each type of ingredient:
- Natural ingredients. These are ingredients that are used as they are obtained after harvesting, without any type of processing beyond physical processing such as pressing or maceration.
- Ingredients of natural origin. They are actually a subcategory of the above. They are those natural ingredients that have undergone some kind of chemical processing, as long as this is a reaction between natural elements, such as the saponification of a soap or the refining of an oil.
- Organic or ecological ingredients. In this case, we are unequivocally talking about ingredients that belong to one of the two previous categories, but must also comply with the standards of organic farming.
- Synthetic ingredients. These are obtained by chemical synthesis, including those that try to replicate molecules obtained from nature or animals, as they make them easier to obtain and reduce the exploitation of natural resources.
- Vegan ingredients. They can belong to any of the above categories, as the only requirement they must meet is that they are not of animal origin or derived from the exploitation of animals.
It is important to know that all cosmetics must guarantee human health in accordance with the regulations established for this purpose, regardless of the origin of their ingredients. Therefore, knowing the origin of the ingredients helps us to make a conscious and coherent consumption according to our personal criteria, but not to define their level of safety.
At Uniquely, our priority is to offer a quality product that is capable of providing safety as well as highly effective care. For this reason, our ingredients are chosen responsibly and always seeking to achieve the objectives of our skin, avoiding the inclusion in our formulations of all those components that are unnecessary to achieve this.
